Backtesting is the process of testing a betting strategy against historical data before you risk real money on it. It answers the only question that matters: would this strategy have made money in the past? A strategy that has never been tested is a guess, and most guesses lose. Backtesting does not guarantee future profit — markets change and edges decay — but it is the cheapest way to kill a bad idea before it costs you your bankroll.

Start by writing the strategy down as a set of rules a computer could follow. For example: back the home team in the Premier League when the model price is at least 10% shorter than the bookmaker's odds, stake 1% of the bankroll, and skip matches where the home team is missing its first-choice striker. Every rule must be objective — no gut feel, no exceptions. If you cannot write the strategy as rules, you cannot backtest it, and you should not bet it.

Next, gather the data. You need historical odds, ideally closing odds, plus the results and the inputs your strategy uses. Closing odds matter because they are the market's best estimate of the true probability, and they are the benchmark professionals use. This is where closing line value comes in: if your bets consistently beat the closing line, you are probably finding real value, even if your short-term results are negative. Use our closing line value calculator to measure this on your own bets.

Run the strategy over the data and measure three things: return on investment, the number of bets, and the worst losing run. A strategy with 500 bets and a 5% ROI is meaningful; a strategy with 20 bets and a 30% ROI is noise. Watch the drawdown — if the worst losing run would have cut your bankroll in half, the strategy is too risky whatever its headline return. And always test on data the strategy was not built on: a strategy tuned to fit the past perfectly is overfitted, and overfitted strategies lose money in the real world.

Three traps ruin most backtests. Survivorship bias — testing only on teams or leagues that still exist, while ignoring the ones that were relegated or folded. Look-ahead bias — using information that was not available at the time of the bet, like a final injury report when you placed the bet hours earlier. And ignoring the bookmaker's margin: a strategy that beats the closing line by 2% is not profitable if the margin is 5%. Before you trust any result, read our guide to expected value in sports betting and the basics of how football betting odds work. Backtesting is a filter, not a fortune teller — use it to reject bad ideas quickly and keep the few that survive.

A backtest that looks good still needs a forward test before real money goes in. Paper trading means running the strategy on live matches, recording the bets you would have placed, and tracking the results for at least 100 bets — without staking a cent. This catches the problems a backtest cannot: odds that move before you can bet them, markets that close early, and the discipline of following rules when real matches are in play. During the paper-trading period, track closing line value on every bet, because it is the earliest signal of whether the edge is real. If your paper bets beat the closing line consistently over 100 bets, the strategy deserves a small real-money trial. If they do not, the backtest was overfitted and you have saved your bankroll. Paper trading is slow and unglamorous, which is exactly why most bettors skip it — and exactly why most bettors lose.
